At Home with Belgian interior designer Margaux Doulliez

Welcome to my documentary photography series, where I introduce you to some of my friends. Some of them are artists, creatives, others entrepreneurs, but all of them, just incredibly inspiring in who they are and what they bring to the world.

So why keep them for myself when I can share what makes them so special with you?

Today, I want to introduce you to my oldest friend, Margaux Doulliez, a Belgian Interior Designer.

Margaux is someone with whom I connect so deeply about the beauty of life, but also about what is fragile and the things we don't always understand.

There’s a certain kind of magic in catching someone mid-creation. That liminal space—where ideas are still shaping, colors still testing, and furniture not quite where it’s meant to be—is alive with intention. That’s exactly where I found my friend Margaux when I visited her one quiet afternoon for tea.

Margaux, an interior designer with an eye for the eccentric and an affection for the authentic, welcomed me into her home—a gem she stumbled upon back in 2018. Tucked on on the edge of the city and wrapped in the faded charm of Art Deco bones, the house was a sleeping beauty waiting to be stirred.

And Margaux, with her intuitive design sense and globe-spanning inspirations, was just the person to do it.

At first, she was hesitant when I pulled out my camera. “It’s not finished,” she smiled, gesturing to her kitchen or a corner still searching for the perfect light fixture. But that’s what made it beautiful. This was not a showroom. This was real life, in all its creative, messy glory.

Margaux’s style is anything but ordinary. Her work is rooted in the exploration of materiality, color, and the intuitive juxtaposition of seemingly opposite forces—contemporary and vintage, architectural and organic, graphic and instinctual. She doesn’t decorate; she builds narratives.

Specializing in second homes and boutique hotels, Margaux sees her role not just as a designer but as a translator of atmosphere. “A space should have as much soul as the people who experience it,” she told me as we sat beneath a vintage pendant lamp, sipping herbal tea from mismatched ceramic cups.

Her passion is creating places that feel as rich in character as they are in comfort. Whether it’s a countryside retreat or a city pied-à-terre, the guiding principles remain: elegance, practicality, and a reverence for honest materials.

Her own home, now a subtle blend of past and present, is a perfect embodiment of that ethos. You’ll find creamy plaster walls next to linen couches, handmade wooden tableware next to Bauhaus lines. It’s both deliberate and spontaneous, with that ineffable quality of just feeling right.

And here's the beautiful twist—you can stay there. While Margaux escapes to the countryside to spend slow, grounding days with her beloved mare, her city home becomes available on Airbnb for short stays.

It’s not just a rental; it’s an invitation. A chance to step inside a story that’s still being written, to experience a space where elegance meets warmth, where every object has purpose, and where no corner is too precious to be lived in.

Margaux and I often talk about that state of being "in progress".

It allows room for growth, for reflection, for play. That’s what you feel in her spaces.

To build a home not just to impress, but to embrace.
